Beauty Blogging

I have been  so converted by the Twitter that I’ve been neglecting my blog. That and it’s been hella stressful at work. At any rate come September/October I should be in school in the UK, and that should provide much fodder for my blog or distract me from it completely. We’ll see.

I’ve been following some amazing beauty bloggers on Twitter, some others I discovered using WordPress’ search function. As you know I’ve become obsessed with hair blogs, well it has morphed into an all round beauty binge. For that I blame the following:

Roast Bake

Since I’ve conquered sada roti, my next challenge will be Johnny or Roast Bake. The Naps Cookbook has a recipe, but I’m concerned about the lard requirement. I’m hoping that butter instead won’t be a major problem.

I’ll hold out for Sunday to try it

Breakfast of Champions

I made Sada this morning. I’ve been craving it whole week and today I caved. I also bought batteries for my camera so I decided to take photos of the process. For the first time I used the full recipe from the Naparima Cookbook, and it came out great.

Making sada is easy, the process is just a little messy and time consuming. But the results are so worth it. And it’s quite a filling and healthy breakfast, I don’t use any fat when cooking the roti. I use oil to cook both the tomato and bhaigan chokas, but not much.

I learned the sakaying process from the Chennette, she was commenting on TriniGourmet’s blog post on sada. It’s soo easy it’s ridiculous.

If you try it let me know how it turns out.

What I’m Thinking…

tabouliFood wise anyway. I’m hoping to get to the market tomorrow morning to do some shopping, so I can really put my new eating plan in place. I’m really into trying some new salad ideas; not as entrees though, I prefer them as starters or sides.

Eating Healthy

It’s so easy, because of the proliferation of American media in Trinidad & Tobago, to discount our customs as inferior. Trying to figure out how to eat properly as an adult gets trickier, because everyone is touting some new miracle food, and it’s usually one we’re not likely to get in Trinidad and Tobago anytime soon. And if you can get it, it’s really expensive.

So I’m trying in my dotage, to re-learn some proper eating habits. And of course my pocket, and possibly health will benefit greatly from my looking to foods from home. In that vein when a friend of mine forwarded an email touting the superior health benefits of local foods, I  decided to keep it. I’m not sure who wrote the original, so I’ll summarize the contents and link to the relevant websites.

My Diet

I’ve been thinking about my diet recently, and I feel like I need to make some changes. I keep wondering if I’m getting enough nutrients. So I think thatcaribbean-fruit I have to put some concrete plans in place.

My first plan will be to introduce more vegetables into my diet. When I last vacationed by my parents; they live in the US, I lost weight really easily. OK,  not easily, but it really wasn’t that hard. I ate less, and I ate more fruit.

My typical day went like this.

  • Start the morning with fresh juice: a fruit and veggie combo,  Daddy would make using his trusty juicer.
  • Have breakfast, possibly a sandwich, with tea and a fruit salad.
  • Lunch would be at 3pm. We’d start with a fresh salad, and then move on to the meal which will consist of a veggie side dish, meat, carbs and legumes.
  • Dinner would be sandwich, and tea.
  • Of course I’m snacking on fruits, nuts, and sneaking ice cream, cherry jam cookies, and the occassional chocolate in between.

And yes I lost weight, about 10 pounds over a three week period (give or take 2 pounds).

Whoopie Pies

Ok I’d never heard of these before, but they sound great!  Whoopie pies are a traditional Amish dessert. They look huge, fattening and yummy. Yep, I’m making this during my week home from work. Here’s the recipe.

Thank God for tag surfer or  I would have missed out on this recipe.

Decision Making Time People

Carnival is offcially one month away. Time to get serious. Your salary for January should be in the bank, so pick  a costume and secure your place in de section.spangled-cotinga-frontline

What you say? All bands are sold out. Yes, but if you want in you can still find a spot. You could try Sando Carnival and party on the hill for a change, aim for a smaller band or try  some Ole Mas. Sailor Mas might be an interesting change.

If that won’t do, then don’t worry my Bikini and Beads faithful, there’s still lots of hope for you. I give you:

I mean I’m not playing, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t be. I mean, it is the Greatest Show on Earth!

Keep Fit

I love infomercials. It’s an early morning ritual for me, turn on the TV find something interesting to watch, mostly infomercials. However I’m not just watching any kind of infomercial, mostly the fitness ones.

I’ve had issues with my weight for as long as I know myself. So I’m drawn to the “fix it” premise behind these programmes. To be honest I love the hype and the potential for doing something for yourself, and it be something healthy. Also the makeover potential appeals to me.

However I’m picky about the type of exercise infomercials I like. First and foremost, I love toys: balls, steps, rubber bands and trampolines. Anything to make the work seem more like fun I’m into. Also I believe in cardio/ weight programmes are the best for weight loss and all round health.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate gadgets that are too big, and look cheaply made. The “toys” have to be practical, and not too bulky or mechanical. So mini-steppers (which we’ve had in my house), ab-machines or waist trimmers are out.

The programme has to make sense. I hate the gimmicky shows that obviously don’t. Don’t tell me I’ll lose weight by breathing and pulsing various muscles, I won’t buy it.

Phat Girl.

I have been putting on weight at an alarming rate for the past few years. And for some reason I can’t seem to stop the cycle. I would join the gym, or start running around De Savannah or something and then stop. I’d lose a little weight and then stop. And to be quite frank it’s very depressing.

I’ve started this horrible habit of emotional eating. When I get pissed off or stressed at the office, or am just a bit unhappy, I turn to snacks. Not good, especially since this is a particularly stressful time in my life. Like all bad habits it’s much easier to start it than stop.

I don’t hate exercising, I just can’t seem to keep it up. It’s always the easiest thing to drop from my schedule. And I get so self-conscious when I decide to re-join the gym. Really self-conscious.

Now I know why. Apparently I have some serious mental barriers which are keeping me from exercise. The women in the study I linked to reported feeling:

  • Feeling self-conscious.
  • Not wanting to fail.
  • Fearing injury.
  • Perceived poor health.
  • Having minor aches and pains.
  • Feeling too overweight to exercise.

I have to say I can honestly relate. It’s kind of a relief to know my issues aren’t mine alone. What I’m hoping is that as hard as it may be to overcome, that I’ll be able too. I start triathlon training on Sautrday, I don’t have a bike yet, but I’m trying. And I’m putting that out there because already I want to quit, beause I’m so scared.
