Project 2010
My lovely Twitter friend GWTO messaged me a while ago with this unique preposition: to create a post for his blog about my favourite song. That’s actually difficult for me, because if you read my blog, you know that I love all types of songs, and I have lots of favourites across genres.
I had lots of songs running through my head; Aap Jaisa Koi, which I hunted down obsessively; UpTown Top Rankin, the Tight’n Up version; and Firey by Meastro, my motto for 2010.
All great options, but then reality struck. I’m in the UK for a year doing my Post-Grad degree. This means I’ll be missing Carnival for the 4th time in my life. I love mas, even if I don’t play I must watch. I love the Kings and Queens competition, going to the tents and the fetes. Missing it is going to be hard, but not as traumatic as my first time. Again my education was to blame, on Ash Wednesday I lay on my bed in Jamaica and cried.
I’ve never played J’Ouvert though I respect the tradition tremendously. However I love J’Ouvert calypso and soca because it has an earthiness that’s missing in the typical fare. Powder by Machel, Blue by 3 Canal, and Benjai’s Tanty are my favourites in this genre (that La Douma riddim is pres-SHA!).
But I’m a sentimental fool, so I had to select the song that introduced me to this genre. When it came out, I was in Montessori (Happy Vale in Diego). We were playing sweeties in the school Carnival, my mother made this horrible brown jumper with red ruffles because I was supposed to be a toffee. Unfortunately I wasn’t feeling that portrayal, or maybe I was bewitched by Penguin because I told anyone who asked that I was “De devil dey!” True story.

Save Your Skin
Someone needs to warn West Indian women about winter weather. It plays havoc on your skin. One day you have soft skin, but a few hours here could have you looking like a brown lizard. I was buying cream after cream, trying to save my skin. Nivea was too thick (my mother insists on the one in the tin), Cuticura was too weak, and Vaseline didn’t last long enough.
My friend recommended Astral Cream or baby oil (for the stripper look). I, however, think I paying too much for a degree to adopt Stripper-wear, went for the former, thank goodness. I can’t vouch for it when the weather gets warmer. I’ve heard that January/ February are brutally cold, but I think that I’m prepared.
Soca Awards
The International Soca Awards will take place on the island of Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos on October 30th. The awards were started in 2003 by Colin Jackman as a way to recognise the work of our hard-working soca artists.

I wasn’t too pleased with some of the selections, but that’s always the case with me and awards. Some of the usual suspects were there, and some weren’t.
So in a moment of idleness I decided to put up my picks for who should win. In other words here’s the list of my favourites in each category:
Flying High
I in MIA for a bit visiting my mother before I fly off AGAIN for school in LON. I hate flying, but I know my fear isn’t rational. Plus I love traveling, so I fight through it.
I had my camera with me in flight so I decided to take some pics to share with you.
My fear isn’t paralysing, thank God, but it makes the process all the more stressful. Hope you like the pics.
No Licks!
Watched the Tyra show this evening, and she was talking to former Top Model contestants about their experiences with abuse. It made me think.
Swine Flu
As of Saturday, June 27 the number of Swine Flu cases in Trinidad & Tobago reached 54. Don’t worry I’m feeling fine, and hopefully you are too. So lets keep it that way. Below I’ve posted an email from the World Health Organisation with instructions on how to protect yourself. Give it a read through, and just practise basic hygiene.

Brazilian Blowdry
It seems that protein treatments are key to getting your hair bone-straight without permanently altering the hair structure. Products like ApHogee are very popular in this regard and keratin seems to be the power house protein when it comes to relaxing the curl pattern in your hair.
How to Get a Big Butt.
Apparently it is possible, which is great news for those who haven’t been blessed with a truly maximus gluteus . According to Buffy the Body, she owes hers to protein shakes. And we’ve seen how well that worked for her.
Roast Bake
Since I’ve conquered sada roti, my next challenge will be Johnny or Roast Bake. The Naps Cookbook has a recipe, but I’m concerned about the lard requirement. I’m hoping that butter instead won’t be a major problem.
I’ll hold out for Sunday to try it
