Change Confirmed

I cry easily, but I’m very good at hiding my tears. Yesterday, if I was home watching the television by myself, I would have cried.

I tried not to get too invested in the US Elections, because I’m not an American. I also don’t want to put this man on a pedestal he can’t climb off, because he’s just a man, but I can’t escape that it’s a big deal.

I looked at the ceremony, and while the shouts of, “Obama, obama” made me cringe, I couldn’t keep from repeating these word in my head:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all man are created equal..”

And this cartoon held a special place of residence in my heart yesterday. It’s by Washington Post Cartooniest Tom Toles.

Again congrats America, I think you made the right choice.

Yes You Did!

America congratulations. You’ve proven that you can see past colour to get to the message. You’ve proven that you understand what matters and what doesn’t, well done.

But remember; he wuk now start, and it go be rough. Your troops are fighting a losing battle in Iraq, and the economy is in a mess. Right now is a kind of sucky time to be president. I just hope that you give him the chance to do what he needs to do. But more importantly I really hope he can be the change you, and the rest of us, need right now.

Last night DL Hughley and Rev. AL Sharpton discussed the implications of an Obama presidency on America and the rest of the world. It was a great disussion, watch and discuss.

Happy Independence Day Trinidad & Tobago

46 years ago today, we decided to go it alone. Make our own way as a country, free from any ties and obligations to any another.

We’re still  a young state, and still have a long way to go in terms of defending our right to exist and express our selves as Trinbagonians on the global stage. But we learning.

The national flag of Trinidad and Tobago being raised for the first time.

There’s a really interesting story of how the flag was raised. Apparently Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal was operating on “Trini time” and was running late. The ridiculously thick dress costumes the military wear was too much for Coast Guards man Rawle Coa to bear and he fainted while hoisting the flag.

Of course, the Doctor had to address us. As Prime Minister Dr Eric Williams asked,

“What use will you make of your independence? What will you transmit to your children five years from today? Other countries ceased to exist in that period. Some, in much less time, have become totally disorganised, a prey to anarchy and civil war.”

What use indeed?

Still, Trinidad is my land, and of it I am proud and glad. I couldn’t find The Mighty Sniper’s original recording; so click here for Byron’s remake, and click here for the lyrics.

Racism on the Internet: Lets Broaden Our Minds

“I studied psychology in school, and the best psychology is in literature. It’s so much easier to understand a character than a theory.”

Natalie Portman

If you want to be a better person, you’re going to have to work. I think reading is the answer to all of life’s problems. Everything you need to know, you’ll find in a book. So if you want to read to free your mind, here are the best subjects to choose from.

  • History- It’s simple really, you need to know the facts of what happened, what the conditions were like, how it was, and how it ended to know why we are how we are. You have to read from a lot of authors to come to the truth, because History is about perception. Also you would be well served to include in your  readings, books about life in Western Africa before, during and after the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It can be overwhelming sometimes, or it could be like reading a newspaper article from another time. Whatever, the rewards to your mind and soul will be numerous. For suggested readings click here. Racism on the Internet

Once people have the freedom to express themselves they will use it. The results won’t always be pretty. In some cases they won’t always be true.

That’s how I feel about racism on the Internet. People have the freedom to say the most positive heart warming things. They also have the ability to say the most soul crushing things, and Lord do they. As a black woman I’m very sensitive about issues of racism. It upsets me the things people say online.

I understand how tempting racism can be; how easy it is to fall into. I do! It’s so easy, in a way it’s like your mind is working against you. But if you understand the process, you can help yourself.
