Cricket Lovely Cricket!

Went to the Twenty/20 match on Sunday. West Indies vs England, and what do you know we won! By six wickets to boot!

Windies played well from start to finish. Something that’s all too rare,  so Sunday’s match was nice. Oh and we had celebrities in the audience, the wider crowd wasn’t privy to his attendence, but Mick Jagger was here. He’s been before, in fact I think he played mas with Harts already.

Anyway I digress, here’s some shots of the fun at the Oval.

May the Good Lord Bless and Keep Her Always

salandy_beltsI’ve spoken about celebrity death, and how we (the public) relate to it before. But every experience is always unique. By the time I actually got out of bed this morning, 21-year old Jizelle Salandy was dead.

Jizelle was a female boxer, and a rising sport star in Trinidad and Tobago who won most of her fights. People have criticised her management, especially promoter Buxo Potts, for selecting less than honourable matches for his pugilistic phenom. But the fact remains, she was a good fighter who had received several national and sporting awards for her achievement.

But no more, Jizelle died in an early morning accident on the Beethem Highway. Another victim of our notoriously violent roadways. Jizelle’s death comes after another one of our star athletes was in a serious accident at the start of this year. Fortunately the “Torpedo” and his companion survived. But both incident serve to remind us of the dangers on our roadways, and the cost to us as a people.

The two most famous road fatalities in recent history are D.J. Lalo and Onika Bostic. They’ve been accompanied by hundreds as a the years go by, and by the thousands who proceeded them. Including the man who wrote the original version of Firey; the tune Bunji used to become the 2008 Soca Monarch.

But famous or no, the experts say most accidents are preventable. Most are caused by human error.

I don’t profess to be the best driver. After a friend of mine lost her cousin in a horrible accident a few years ago on a Good Friday morning, I’ve since resolved to try and take greater care when driving. I’ve also started saying a prayer every time I get behind the wheel, because I want to remind myself of that promise, and I need God’s help to keep it.

Please be careful on the roads.

Living In a Fast Car

These days once it rains in sweet T&T, it’s flooding. Constant rains create overly saturated grounds, and with it landslips, collapsing homes and highways, mud everywhere and death. Which all amounts to a frustrating reality for residents.

So any car I buying ( if I was in the market for a car) would be a Sport Utility Vehicle. With all my eco-friendly ambitions, reality suggests a sedan just ent go cut it in Trinidad no more. I want a REAL SUV, with manual transmission and 4-wheel drive to boot.

So I was having a “what if” conversation with my disrespectful brother this weekend, and asked what kind of vehicle he’d suggest for me. The first thing he did was veto, my dreams of balancing a clutch. According to him, I (who is licensed to drive a car with manual transmission) am not a “real” driver and should stick to automatic.

Secondly, he said, since I’m not a car person, translation: don’t know or give a shit ’bout them, should buy a vehicle local mechanics are familiar with. In other words, forget about the European cars.

So what does my rude brother recommend?

Well yes, “pull up to my bumper babay.”

What A Week!

Well, it’s been quite a week. Madonna drop-kicked Guy; poor Guy. The cutie from Desperate Housewives, who I liked since he was on Queer As Folk, got into a terrible accident. But good news, his prognosis is good! T&T’s national football team gave the United States a solid cutass 🙂 And I, in a fit of madness, signed my unfit ass up for triathlon training. Sigh. It’s a for a worthy cause, really! So I’ll need support and prayers.

So you see it’s been quite a week.

Found! The Secret to the Jamaican Athletes’ Success at the Beijing Olympics!

Well it seems the IAAF ent playing this rounds. They doing all they can to make sure nobody has an unfair chance in the Olympics. While I doh give them wrong, they may be taking it a bit far. A Sport reporter friend of mine shared this IAAF memo with me.

Imagine ground provisions, not steriods wins the day!.

Yes Richard!!!

Richard Thompson won silver in the men’s 100 metres!

I’m so happy. I was really hoping for a medal and we got one. What’s so funny is that I watched the race, and didn’t even realise Thompson came second. I was convinced he was third (I know, I know).

And you seen Bolt (say it fast)! Fantastic race, I wanted an all West Indian medal count, but Asafa didn’t medal.

But for the first time since Hasley Crawford won gold in the 70s, a West Indian has taken the first prize. For a West Indian to take the second too, I ain’t lie I cry.

Everybody Loves Asafa!

Jamaica’s Asafa Powell is the most talked about athlete going into the Beijing Olympics.

The Dow Jones Insight monitored the broadcasts from 6000 international media during the period July 15-28 and calculated that Mr. Powell was mentioned 17% of the time, whenever the discussion involved athletes by name.

His fellow countryman Usian Bolt, the fastest man in the world, didn’t figure on the list…go figure!

I guess everybody loves Asafa!
