My World

The world according to me!

Life in London

I’ve been in this country since the 9th of October, so I’ve already completed one month and I can’t complain one bit.

School has been hectic, but not hard, and so far I haven’t been wasting my mother’s money. In fact if you’d looked at this morning’s tweets you’ll already know that I got a merit (just under distinction) for my first essay. I’m quite proud of myself. The plan now is to keep up the high standard.

As for my blogging, well my camera is playing the ass and I am still unemployed. Working on both of those senarios at the moment, I’m job hunting like crazy, and when I get a job then I can buy a new camera.

My laptop,  a story I’d rather not rehash (check my tweets;synopsis: Amazon UK sucks), I’ll be getting from Dell next week. Then I’ll apply for internet with Virgin Media. But the library has been saving my ass with connecting to the fam and keeping up with research.

Anyways, I’ve got to go.

Father Charles

Oh all the things you coulda get in trouble doing, yuh choose plagiarism. 1st year university students are schooled on the evils of plagiarism even before the they start class. That’s the level foolishness you’d be doing, Father Henry Charles?

By the way, the reason for your resignation, not ringing true. I’m not saying it isn’t but…

I can’t wait for the completely original apology in Mass, and in your Guardian column. You owe it to your disappointed public.

About the Rihanna/ Chris Brown Tragedy

I had no intentions of commenting about this, because it’s such a sensitive issue, and it must be done with justice. But then I found this via Jezebel (of course), and I had to share it with you.

It’s political cartoonist Kevin Moore addressing the issue with sense. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Oopsy

Oh Lord my computer has been acting up. Work has been stressful and it’s Carnival. So I apologise for not posting regularly, but I should be back on track soon.

Love yuh!

May the Good Lord Bless and Keep Her Always

salandy_beltsI’ve spoken about celebrity death, and how we (the public) relate to it before. But every experience is always unique. By the time I actually got out of bed this morning, 21-year old Jizelle Salandy was dead.

Jizelle was a female boxer, and a rising sport star in Trinidad and Tobago who won most of her fights. People have criticised her management, especially promoter Buxo Potts, for selecting less than honourable matches for his pugilistic phenom. But the fact remains, she was a good fighter who had received several national and sporting awards for her achievement.

But no more, Jizelle died in an early morning accident on the Beethem Highway. Another victim of our notoriously violent roadways. Jizelle’s death comes after another one of our star athletes was in a serious accident at the start of this year. Fortunately the “Torpedo” and his companion survived. But both incident serve to remind us of the dangers on our roadways, and the cost to us as a people.

The two most famous road fatalities in recent history are D.J. Lalo and Onika Bostic. They’ve been accompanied by hundreds as a the years go by, and by the thousands who proceeded them. Including the man who wrote the original version of Firey; the tune Bunji used to become the 2008 Soca Monarch.

But famous or no, the experts say most accidents are preventable. Most are caused by human error.

I don’t profess to be the best driver. After a friend of mine lost her cousin in a horrible accident a few years ago on a Good Friday morning, I’ve since resolved to try and take greater care when driving. I’ve also started saying a prayer every time I get behind the wheel, because I want to remind myself of that promise, and I need God’s help to keep it.

Please be careful on the roads.

These are the shots from my tour of Belmont. So you could see some of the things I was talking about. More importantly, you’ll see the fretwork I fell in love with.

The Historic Tour of Belmont

Last Sunday my friend and I went on the Historical Tour of Belmont put on by the National Museum of Trinidad & Tobago. It was great. It was so good to see Belmont with an informed eye. I spent two years travelling in an out of Belmont daily when I did Sixth Form in St. Francois, and wasn’t appropriately appreciative of it’s beauty.

We learned about the Africans who came as free men to Trinidad; a lot of them settled in Belmont. The Mandigos, Ibos and Radas came as artisens, masons: literate free men who lived and thrived in one of Port-of-Spain’s first suburbs.

We looked at the wonderful fretwork, some of these men and their ancestors worked on. Fretwork is like a wooden filigree accent you put on your roof or window. It adds a lovely design element to your house and is a hallmark of Colonial architecture.

Yes You Did!

America congratulations. You’ve proven that you can see past colour to get to the message. You’ve proven that you understand what matters and what doesn’t, well done.

But remember; he wuk now start, and it go be rough. Your troops are fighting a losing battle in Iraq, and the economy is in a mess. Right now is a kind of sucky time to be president. I just hope that you give him the chance to do what he needs to do. But more importantly I really hope he can be the change you, and the rest of us, need right now.

Last night DL Hughley and Rev. AL Sharpton discussed the implications of an Obama presidency on America and the rest of the world. It was a great disussion, watch and discuss.

Housekeeping

I used to have a blog called GoodFaith, but it got too tedious to manage two WordPress Blogs. So I’ve imported the content into this one. So mind the mess, I going to spend a little time cleaning up the junk.
